This story deserves to be shot. I'm sure even a kid would agree.

The Ear Muffs

As the sun cast it's warm light over the meadows, the bright yellow glow extended as far as the eye could see, almost as if the meadows were a never-ending sea of gold. The grass swayed gently back and forth in the cool breeze, and the sweet delicate aroma of blooming flowers hung in the air. Overhead birds flew, gliding peacefully and calmly through the fresh summer's air.

In all it's majesty, the great oak tree stood providing shade and comfort for an old man and his young grandson, who toyed relentlessly with the blades of grass near his feet. Among the calmness of the meadows, the faintest snore could be heard, as the old man slept peacefully against the trunk of the tree.

"Grandpa!", hollered the boy as he tugged forcefully on the old man's shirt. In a startled jump, the old man stood up and held his hand to his chest as he gasped for air.

"What's the matter, sonny?", he asked, half out of breath. "Did I wake you, grandpa?" asked the boy with a look of innocence in his eyes.

"Of course not," answered the old man with the slightest hint of sarcasm, "your grandpa is as awake as he has ever been." Satisfied with the answer, the young boy proceeded to ask, "Can you tell me a story?".

Finally managing to recover his breath, the old man was about to blurt out a reply, when the young boy pleaded once again. This time he had a cute look no one could ever resist. "Please...", he insisted. "Well, alright", said the old man, realizing that he had no chance of winning the argument. "Let me tell you this story about this young elf that lived deep within a dark musty forest..."

"Oooooo... How spooky!", interrupted the boy with his eyes filled with eagerness and curiosity.

"Yes, very." replied the man, "Now where was I? Oh, yes, deep in a dark forest," he continued, "lived as small elf known as Joe. Although he led a fairly normal life, he had an overwhelming curiosity".

"Just like me, right?", questioned the boy with a smirk on his face.

"Yes", replied the old man as he softly patted the boy on the head.

"Anyway, Joe was walking down the forest one day when he came across small green camping tent in a sun drenched clearing. 'Hum,' murmured Joe, 'what have we here?' he asked. He carefully paced around the tent, making sure the owners weren't anywhere to be found, before he finally decided to take a look inside. Much to his delight, the camping tent belonged to a rather eccentric couple that had the habit of bringing all sort of junk where ever they went. Fortunately, they were hiking the nearby mountains, so Joe had plenty of time to shift through the bags and fool around with the many bizarre objects he had found. Old dentures and shattered eyeglasses, half empty first aid kits and broken plastic forks, nearly everything you wouldn't expect someone to pack for a camping trip!"

The old man looked down at the grass and paused for a few seconds as he tried to come up with the rest of the story, meanwhile the boy's attentive gaze did not even flinch.

"Ah, yes", continued the man, having had an idea, "Joe was particularly delighted when he found a pair of soft, green ear muffs. A smile came to his face, as he put it on and observed himself on the small pocket mirror that was fastened to the tent's supports. 'Wait until the other elves see this!', he declared as he walked out of the tent, proudly wearing his newly found garment."

"That was a great story, grandpa!", commented the boy mistakenly thinking that that the story was over.

"Oh, but there is more", replied the old man, "Don't you want to hear what happens to Joe after he finds the ear muffs?"

"Yeah, sure I do!", exclaimed the boy.

"Well," continued the old man, "as Joe was walking back to his village, he meet three of his best friends as they paced along the trail in the opposite direction. Moe was the skinniest elf to ever roam the Earth, Doe was the know-it-all among the elves and Bloe was the greatest air-head to ever dwell in the forest.

'Hey, Joe!' exclaimed Moe and Doe harmoniously.

Bloe just stood there, apparently unaware of his surroundings. The elves were well accustomed to his air-headedness and didn't mind a bit.

'Hi, fellas!', exclaimed Joe. 'Look at what I found!' he said eagerly as he pointed to his ear muffs.

Finally taking notice of the situation, Bloe asked, with the usual puzzlement expression on his face, 'Duh... I didn't know you had lost them... uh... ear thingies.'

'Ear muffs!', yelled Doe and Moe harmoniously.

'Yeah... what they said.' corrected Bloe.

'Excuse me?' asked Joe.

'The ear muffs, where did you find them?', asked Doe and Moe harmoniously.

'What hand cuffs? I didn't grind hand cuffs! What are you talking about?' asked Joe. 'I'm confused!'

'Welcome to the club...' said Bloe.

'Doe, I think Joe is going deaf' said Moe harmoniously to Doe.

'Yup. He sure is' said Doe harmoniously as he nodded in agreement.

'Huh? I can't hear a thing. Speak louder!' said Joe. Moe and Doe took turns yelling louder and louder, but no matter how hard they tried, Joe could not hear a word. Eventually they gave up and walked away, leaving Joe and Bloe to themselves.

'Duh...' said Bloe.

'Duh...' said Joe.

'Duh!' yelled Joe and Bloe harmoniously.

From this point on, Joe and Bloe became the best of friends and together lived a great, air-headed life... The End."

"That's the best story I have ever heard!", exclaimed the young boy with a brilliant smile on his face.

"I'm glad you like it.", said the man, "How about heading home for dinner now?"

The boy agreed and they both continued down the dirt road, their voices slowly fading away as they walked into the distance.
